Isle of Wight - Sandown
Lots for families to do, traditional seaside entertainment
Lovely, long sandy beach
Good value accommodation
Some parts quite commercialised
Very quiet off-season
With its long, sandy beach, and traditional seaside facilities, Sandown is a great destination for families. In addition to the traditional amusements, there's Dinosaur Isle, with lots of activities for children, also the Isle of Wight Zoo, which has one of the largest collections of tigers in Europe. There's a playpark with go-karting, slides and an outdoor gym.
Sandown also boasts a pier with all the traditional amusements for keeping the kids happy, particularly on a wet weather day: fun fair, crazy golf, bowling and amusement arcades.
If it's a sandy beach you're looking for, Sandown is one of the best on the Isle of Wight. In one direction in Sandown Bay you can see the resort of Shanklin, in the other direction are the white cliffs below Culver Down. Close to the white cliffs is the beach at Yaverland, where there's a watersports centre, featuring sea-doos, sailing and different types of surfing.
