The capital of the Isle of Wight, Newport is the best place for shopping, offering local Island shops and also many of the chain shops seen elsewhere in the UK (Marks and Spencers, Next, Matalan, Monsoon, New Look etc).  There's also a multiplex cinema and lots of pubs and restaurants.

Many of the old warehouses around the river have been redeveloped, the Quay Arts Centre provides a showcase for local artists, has a small cafe and often has evening entertainment.

Every year in June Newport is the site for the Isle of Wight Festival which hosts many internationally known rock groups and artists.
